Alternatives to NPE


NPE, namely Nonylphenol ethoxylate is widely used in the application of industrial & institutional (I&I) cleaning, paints, oilfield chemicals, leather, textile, and agrochemical, usually work as wetting and dispersing agent. However, the surfactant will degrade into nonylphenol, which is considered to be an endocrine disruptor, and its toxic nature on the aquatic organisms along with increasing use of its substitutes make a declining trend in the demand of NPE.
The EU, Canada, USA, etc, are the forerunners who have effectively eliminated use of NP/NPE in most industrial and product sectors.
In 2012, USA EPA published eight alternatives for NPE in all-purpose cleaners, listed in the table below.They are safer while comparable to NPE in cost and performance.
Another surfactant I find it a ideal alternative to NPE is natural phenol ethoxylate, called cashew phenol ethoxylate, made from cardanol (or cashew phenol) and ethylene oxide. The emulsification of this surfactant is good, and it has a high degree of biodegradability. Plus, cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL, cardanol derives from CNSL) is of low cost and abundantly available.

Green Wetter APG0810

Description
Chemical name: Alkylpolyglucoside C8-10
CAS no.: 68515-73-1
APG0810 is nonionic surfactant made from natural raw materials – glucose from corn and fatty alcohols from coconut oils. It is very mild, low in toxicity and readily biodegradable. It exhibits good wetting and dispersing properties, detergency and foaming ability, stability and solubility in high concentration of alkaline or electrolyte solutions and compatibility even synergistic effects with other surfactants. 

Applications
1) Emulsifier/wetter in agrochemicals
2) Highly alkaline formulations/detergents
3) Hard surface cleaners
4) Dairy cleaners

Product Usage
(1) Do compatibility tests before usage. 
(2) The high pH value of APG may lead to characteristic turbidity of product when stored in room temperature. It has no negative influence to the product quality and use. When used as an additive in formulations, adjust the pH about 8.0, the turbidity disappears. The high pH value has preservative effects to the product. 
(3) The product can be heated and stirred until uniform before use, especially for APG0810 70%.
(4) Dosage of APG0810 as agrochemical adjuvant in Gyphosate 41% SL:
Dosage of APG0810 (50% content): 10-14%
Dosage of APG0810 (70% content): 7-10%

Packing
The product can be packed in 200kg/plastic drum, etc.

Product Safety, Handling and Storage
Transport as non-dangerous goods.
Tight up and store in ventilated, dry, cool place.
Shelf life is 24 months.
