Why Agricultural Spray Adjuvants?

Agrochemicals take a long journey from the sprayer, to the crops, and make biological effect. Many factors will block them.
  • Tank pollution:
Residue agrochemicals from last application (different products) may cause compatibility problem and/or crop damage.
We need tank cleaner!
  • Mix Problem:
Mix different formulations in one application to save labor and time but sometimes may cause incompatibility, precipitation, flocculated suspension which leading to antagonism or even crop damage.
We need compatibility agent!
  • Drift:
Too fine or coarse droplet are not ideal to reach the target.
We need anti-drift agent!
  • Evaporation:
Crops need time to absorb agrochemicals in the presence of water solution. Crystallization on the surface is useless and waste.
We need moisturizer, sticker!
  • Rebound:
Droplet rebound is off-target,and waste in soil.
We need deposition aid!
  • Wax layer:
Wax layer in most cases is what the non-reflective leaves have, which is hard for spray solution to wet and penetrant. Uneven coverage is not good for contact pesticides, and penetration failure is bad for systemic pesticides.
We need wetting agent, spreading agent, penetrant, etc!
In conclusion, agricultural spray adjuvants, or tank mix adjuvants above mentioned or of other utilities are good helper for agrochemicals to better finish their task!

Water Conditioner Pro-Buffer to Acidify the Spray Water and Handle Hard Water

As we talked in my former article that water quality is often mistaken as a minor factor in overall efficacy of pesticides efficacy while it do affect the pesticide performance.
Water hardness and pH are the two main characteristics of water quality that impact on the efficacy. And I'm excited to introduce the adjuvant Pro-Buffer S2 and Pro-Buffer L2 developed by Profirst, water conditioners in solid form and in liquid form respectively, which are designed to reduce pH value and handle hard water.

You Need a Penetrant for Systemic Pesticides

Systemic is what we use to describe the mode of action pesticide work on crops, in general terms. We have systemic herbicides, systemic curative fungicides and systemic insecticides. Once these pesticides are applied on part of the plant, they can move inside the plant following absorption by the plant.
Penetrant is an activator adjuvant that can help enhance cuticle penetration and absorption, which is just an ideal case for systemic pesticides.
MSO adjuvant is a type of penetrant which is popular now. They are usually combination of MSO (methylated seed oil) and emulsifiers or surfactants. The primary use is with post-emergent herbicides, insecticides and fungicides, especially whose with systemic action. MSO adjuvants can increase droplet spreading, cell permeability, absorption, and efficacy.
We Profirst is now introducing a penetrant series products, named Pro-MSO.

Water Quality in Agrochemical Spraying Will Affect the Product Efficacy

Water accounts for more than 90% in the agrochemical spraying solution. As the foundation of the spraying process, water is overlooked in many cases.
Several key elements about the water quality which will affect the spraying performance:
  • Water hardness
Some negatively-charged pesticide molecules can attach to the positively charged cations,if present in water, like Al+++, Fe+++, Fe++, Mg++, Ca++, Na+. The cations listed are in the order of most potential to bind to pesticides.
This binding leads to the reduction of the solubility, which resulting in the pesticide molecules unable to penetrate the leaf tissue or target pest, or enter at a much lower rate. Thus the performance of pesticides is largely reduced. In other cases, the hard water can cause some chemicals to precipitate and affect the properties of surfactants in the formulation or adding in tank mix, thus may block nozzles and pre-filters and cause additional wear of spray rigs.
Measurements of hardness are given in terms of the calcium carbonate equivalent, which is an expression of the concentration of hardness ions in water in terms of their equivalent value of calcium carbonate. The greater the concentration, the harder the water.
Many herbicides carry a negative charge, such as glyphosate, glufosinate ammonium, 2,4-D, and other weak-acid products.
So next time if the Glyphosate did not perform well, in addition to the reasons of resistance, short dosage, etc, you should consider about the hard water.
Solution
The most commonly used water conditioner is ammonium sulfate (AMS). AMS in solution disassociates, and the sulfate binds with cations in the spray solution, preventing the development of glyphosate-cation complexes that tend to have lower absorption into plant leaves. In addition, the ammonium ion can associate with the glyphosate molecule, which helps facilitate glyphosate absorption into the leaf.
Also some sequestering or chelating agents can be used to remove the antagonistic ions by holding cations and prevent attachment to herbicides.
  • Water pH
The pH value of the water may affect the stability and efficacy of pesticides.
Pesticides normally are formulated as weak acids, or neutral to weak alkaline products. Generally, pesticides perform best in slightly acidic water, pH 4-6.5. Pesticides such as sulfonylurea herbicides perform better in water that is slightly alkaline.
A higher or lower than optimal pH range can cause some pesticides degradation or breakdown. This process of hydrolysis is usually permanent and irreversible, which will reduce the life of pesticides in solution, affect the physical properties of some formulations and reduce the efficacy. Besides, deposits in pipes and blockage of equipment(high pH case), and corrosion of metal pipes and fittings(low pH case) can happen.
Solution
Use buffer to get an idea pH. Acid such as sulphuric or phosphoric acid lowers pH while alkaline such as potassium hydroxide increases pH.
  • Water turbidity
Sometimes the water from ditch, river or ponds are visibly muddy. This kind of water may contain suspended particles of clay, silt and fine organic matter. The effectiveness of herbicides such as glyphosate and paraquat are reduced once they are binding to the suspended sediments, rendering them unable for plant uptake. And muddy water which is not sufficiently filtered can cause equipment problems.
Solution
Filter the water before filling into the spray tank. Heavy particles can sink into the bottom in a settling tank, while very light particles can be settled out by using some certain surfactants.
Testing of spraying water quality is far from the above contents, other items like temperature, salinity, etc can also affect the spraying performance.
Always read the label before using the pesticide!

Alternatives to NPE

NPE, namely Nonylphenol ethoxylate is widely used in the application of industrial & institutional (I&I) cleaning, paints, oilfield chemicals, leather, textile, and agrochemical, usually work as wetting and dispersing agent. However, the surfactant will degrade into nonylphenol, which is considered to be an endocrine disruptor, and its toxic nature on the aquatic organisms along with increasing use of its substitutes make a declining trend in the demand of NPE.
The EU, Canada, USA, etc, are the forerunners who have effectively eliminated use of NP/NPE in most industrial and product sectors.
In 2012, USA EPA published eight alternatives for NPE in all-purpose cleaners, listed in the table below. They are safer while comparable to NPE in cost and performance.
Another surfactant I find it a ideal alternative to NPE is natural phenol ethoxylate, called cashew phenol ethoxylate, made from cardanol (or cashew phenol) and ethylene oxide. The emulsification of this surfactant is good, and it has a high degree of biodegradability. Plus, cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL, cardanol derives from CNSL) is of low cost and abundantly available.
Do you have any other suggestions?
